Safe Listening: A noise, hearing
and hearing loss prevention program for schools
Created by a retired teacher with hearing loss,
the program offers a kit and teachers’ workshop
to:
- teach about hearing and its importance in
our lives
- offer guidelines for hearing health and safety
- teach about the hazards of noise
- improve hearing awareness and listening skills
In a two-hour, hands-on workshop, teachers will
be presented with level-appropriate information,
tools, activities and materials which will demonstrate:
- how hearing takes place
- how loud and/or persistent noise can permanently
damage hearing
- how to recognize how loud is too loud
A kit will be supplied for each school
and during light refreshments,
teachers will get to try out the kit’s
contents. The kit includes:
- teacher information
- classroom-ready, reproducible materials
with answer sheets
- stickers (enough for all students)
- posters
- diagrams
- transparencies
- tuning fork
- decibel meter
- earplugs (1 pair for each person
in the school)
- a board game
The Board Game: Play It By Ear Modelled on the television game Wheel of Fortune,
students play for decibels rather than points.
It is designed to (1) make students aware of
the decibel levels of various sounds and noises,
(2) use words and phrases from various subject
areas so that the game may be played as review
and/or reinforcement of subject matter.
It is designed to be used by the whole class
or in small groups. It can be played with preset
decibel values or students can use the decibel
meter to tests sound levels in their own environment
and use those values in the game. All materials
(game boards for small group use and transparencies
for whole class use, pieces, die and score sheets)
are included.
Protect hearing, reduce classroom noise and
encourage good listening habits in simple ways
integrated into various subjects and activities.
Workshop will be tailored to each school’s
needs.
